By Liam FoxModern technology is being used to preserve an ancient culture in the Daintree Rainforest in far north Queensland.Kuku Yalanji elder Bennett Walker says time and progress are putting his culture at risk.
Some of those sites that were very important to us are gone, he said.So with the local TAFE college, a course was developed for young Yalanji people to map culturally important sites using automotive gps device unit receiver technology and surveying techniques. He says too many young people have lost their Indigenous heritage.
A lot of them are pretty well lost, he said.A donation from the Christensen Fund allowed them to purchase broadcast quality video cameras and editing software to record the elders’ traditional knowledge.Student Marcus Riley says he has been reconnected with his heritage.I’d like to pass it on to my kids and I’d like to see more of these things happening for my kids and their kids, he said.Fellow student Shanelle Young says it has changed her life.A lot of places it was my first time going there.
